Chickenpox (Varicella): Preventing Outbreaks, Protecting Workplaces, and Promoting Immunity

Chickenpox, or Varicella, may be commonly associated with childhood—but for adults, it can be far more serious. Caused by the Varicella-zoster virus (VZV), chickenpox is highly contagious and can lead to severe complications in unvaccinated adults, including pneumonia, skin infections, and even shingles later in life.

In workplaces, a single case can quickly spread, forcing employees into sick leave or quarantine. The good news: chickenpox is easily preventable through vaccination.

Understanding Chickenpox

Chickenpox spreads through respiratory droplets or direct contact with the fluid from skin blisters of an infected person.

It usually begins with fever, fatigue, and loss of appetite, followed by a characteristic itchy rash that turns into fluid-filled blisters before crusting over.

Common symptoms:

  • Fever and tiredness
  • Rash that spreads over the body within 24–48 hours
  • Itchy blisters that eventually scab
  • Body aches and headache

Though often mild in children, chickenpox can be much more severe in adults, leading to complications such as:

  • Bacterial skin infections
  • Pneumonia
  • Brain inflammation (encephalitis)
  • Shingles (Herpes Zoster) later in life

Because the virus remains dormant in the body after infection, adults who have had chickenpox can still develop shingles years later.

Why Chickenpox Still Matters in the Workplace

In modern workplaces, particularly in corporate offices, schools, factories, and healthcare environments, chickenpox can spread quickly through close contact. Even indirect exposure (via shared air or surfaces) can cause infection among unvaccinated employees.

One infected employee can trigger:

  • Multiple secondary infections in the team.
  • Sudden absenteeism lasting 7 to 10 days or more.
  • Mandatory isolation to prevent transmission.
  • Increased medical reimbursements and HMO utilization.

For businesses, these disruptions can significantly affect productivity and operations—especially in industries that require in-person attendance.

Prevention Through Varicella Vaccination

Vaccination is the most effective and reliable way to prevent chickenpox and its complications. It also helps prevent shingles later in life.

Available Chickenpox Vaccines:

  • Varivax® (Merck & Co.) – Live attenuated varicella vaccine.
  • Varilrix® (GlaxoSmithKline) – Live attenuated varicella vaccine.

Both are approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Philippine Department of Health (DOH) for use in children and adults.

Recommended Schedule:

  • Children (12 months and older): 2 doses, given at least 3 months apart.
  • Adults (without prior infection or vaccination): 2 doses, 4–8 weeks apart.
  • Healthcare workers, teachers, office employees, and those working with the public: Strongly advised to get vaccinated to prevent transmission.

Vaccination provides long-term protection and greatly reduces the chance of severe disease or complications.

Corporate Relevance and Workplace Benefits

Adding the Varicella vaccine to corporate health programs offers multiple advantages:

  • Prevents workplace outbreaks and quarantine-related disruptions.
  • Reduces absenteeism and productivity loss due to extended recovery.
  • Decreases HMO claims from hospitalizations and complications.
  • Supports DOLE and DOH workplace health compliance.
  • Improves employee morale and retention through a proactive wellness culture.

Even a single outbreak can disrupt operations for days, making prevention through vaccination a sound investment in continuity and cost control.

Extending Protection to Dependents

Many cases of chickenpox in adults originate from exposure to infected children at home. To address this, progressive organizations extend chickenpox vaccination to dependents: spouses, children, and household members, either fully subsidized or offered at cost during company vaccination drives.

This family-inclusive approach:

  • Promotes herd immunity within households.
  • Reduces secondary absenteeism caused by caregiving duties.
  • Minimizes family healthcare expenses from preventable infections.
  • Helps stabilize corporate HMO costs by lowering infection-related claims.

Healthy families mean fewer sick leaves, and stronger business performance.
