Do Adults Also Need Vaccines? Definitely Yes!

A lot of people have this wrong notion that adults are able to handle most diseases and infections; thus, they feel that they don’t need to get vaccinated.
Others think that everyone has to go through common infections like chicken pox as a ‘rite of passage’ to adulthood. But this is wrong! While most adults could handle common infections, these could actually be prevented through vaccines.
As adults, it is difficult when you are sick. Not only will these diseases affect your job and other responsibilities, it’s actually possible that you could die from these potentially deadly infections and diseases! Remember, even adults need vaccinations, too.

What Vaccines Do I Need?

There are many different factors why you might need to take a particular vaccine. Different people have different needs. In fact, even siblings might not require the same types of vaccines. The vaccines you need to get could depend on the following factors:

  • Age
  • Job
  • Current location
  • Health condition
  • Lifestyle
  • Travel destination

What vaccines you already had in the past

For example, older adults (ages 50 and above) need more vaccines than those 18 to 49 years old. While you might still belong to that lower bracket, you might still need more vaccines because your job could put you at risk of contracting these conditions. This is the reason why health workers are required to get nearly all the vaccines available before they enter the profession. Meanwhile, ladies are encouraged to get vaccinated against the human papillomavirus, but males also need to get this vaccine. Those with certain health conditions or lifestyles might need extra vaccines. For example, smokers are recommended to get the pneumococcal vaccine. If you had complete immunizations as a child, then you are likely to be protected for most of these serious health problems for life. However, it is important to bear in mind that the protection from childhood vaccines can wear off as the years pass. This is the reason why you might need boosters for certain vaccines. And if you did not receive complete immunizations as a kid, then it’s best to catch up on those shots before it is too late.

Vaccines you would commonly need to take as adults include the following:

  • Flu vaccine, once a year TDaP (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis or whooping cough)
  • 1 dose recommended for anyone who never had the Tdap vaccine
  • Td booster, once every 10 years after the last TDap vaccine shot
  • Shingles vaccine, once for ages 50 and above
  • Pneumococcal vaccine (PCV13 and/or PPSV23), once for ages 65 and above

You might also need to get vaccines for additional protection against certain diseases:

  • MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine
  • Hepatitis A vaccine
  • Hepatitis B vaccine
  • Meningococcal disease vaccine
  • Chickenpox vaccine
  • If you are traveling to certain places, you also need to check which vaccines you are required to get before you are given travel clearance or to protect yourself throughout the duration of your trip and for life.

Possible vaccines you might need to get if you’re traveling to other countries include the following:

  • Malaria vaccine
  • Cholera vaccine
  • Polio vaccine
  • Typhoid fever
  • Yellow fever
